5 Hacks For Traveling On a Budget

Hi all! My name is Rachel and I am a travel agent based in Maryland. I primarily work with middle-class individuals and families, looking to plan their ideal getaway on a realistic budget. Below are my top 5 tips for anyone who wants to save a little on their next vacation, without deducting from the time of their life. If you find any of these tips useful, please let me know in the comments and follow for more. Enjoy!

1. Categorize Your Expenses

My best advice for staying realistic on vacation is to take the time to categorize your expenses before the trip. By planning in advance, you can save a lot of time, stress and potential miscommunication. What was meant to be a relaxing vacation can easily become a nightmare if you aren’t realistic about your travel budget and expenses.

There are many resources for budgeting, from online blogs and podcasts, to apps and classes. If you are feeling overwhelmed or just don’t know where to start, I would recommend beginning with an old-fashioned pen and paper. Separate your travel expenses into categories, such as transportation, food, activities, shopping, emergencies etc. When allocating funds for each category, remember to be honest with yourself and to leave wiggle-room for unexpected expenses that are sure to arise.

 2. Bring Your Own Food

For many travelers, experiencing local cuisine and famous food spots is a vacation highlight. However, with so many options to try, food excursions can quickly get out of hand and overtake much of your travel budget. To avoid this, I recommend choosing 1 or 2 restaurants to splurge on, and preparing your own food for the rest of the trip. You can bring your own, or shop for local groceries at your destination. You can even bring your own cookware and go all-out while still saving, If your accommodations allow it.

 3. Compare Packages With Individual Rates

Many travel agents (myself included) will work with vacation companies, who offer packaged deals, often at discounted rates. By bundling flights with hotels, car rentals or activities, vacation companies can offer exclusive deals with an enticing all-in-one package. However, by doing a little research, you may find even better rates on your own. For example, the flight included in the package may be tied to a certain airline, or the hotel next door may have rooms available at half the price. There is nothing wrong with booking a vacation package but if you are looking to save, a quick Google search can do wonders.

4. Travel During The Off-Season

Seasonal tourist destinations will often raise their prices during times of high demand. In particular, summer months, holidays and weekends are expensive times to travel, as that is when the market is most in the suppliers’ favor. If you have a flexible schedule, I would strongly recommend planning your trip for the off-season, as that is when prices are generally at their lowest. Obviously, some destinations- such as ski resorts and water parks- can only operate during certain months of the year. In those cases, try booking on weekdays and avoid holiday weeks, for the best rates.

5. Book In Advance

My final piece of advice is to book your flights, hotels, car rentals and tours as early as possible. Not only do many companies offer early-bird deals, but prices can often be raised last-minute and limited spots can fill quickly. Most suppliers (with the exception of airlines) operate on a reserve-now and pay-later system, so booking in advance carries minimal risk. If you are not offered that luxury, consider obtaining travel insurance, which may cost a little up-front, but can save money in the long run.
